About me
Dr Alyson Wharton-Durgaryan
I am an art historian based near London in the UK. From Sept 2015 to the end of August 2025, I was working full time as Senior Lecturer at the University of Lincoln, School of Humanities and Heritage. From September 2025, I continue to hold my affiliation as Honorary Senior Fellow, but i am now focusing on income-generating projects in addition to my research.
I have over a decade of experience in the higher education sector. Before working at Lincoln, I taught for three years as Assistant Professor at Mardin Artuklu University in Turkey, in the Department of History of Art. Prior to that, I worked briefly at the Keir Collection of Islamic Art in London and whilst I did my PhD at SOAS, University of London, I was supported by a job funded by the Khalili Family Trust. I have collaborated with community organizations such as Hrant Dink Foundation in Turkey and the Centre for Armenian Information and Advice in Ealing. I also have worked with museums such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon and have provided informal advice to museums about Armenian objects. I enjoy liasing with individuals about family history and family archives, particularly pertaining to the fields of Middle Eastern Studies, Armenian Studies, Islamic Art and Ottoman Studies.

Since having my childen and settling in London, I have been taking on consultancy projects from organisations and institutions, formerly through the University of Lincoln, but now managed by myself through Akemenid Heritage Consulting. My work has ranged from providing pro bono advice, helping smaller organisations and individuals raise funding, finding homes for archives, carrying out scoping or built heritage assessments (paid for by sector-funded grants). I have also done provenance reports, digitization and cataloguing projects, and have been commissioned to organize online and large international in-person conferences.
